Community resilience

When coastal cities support community resilience, they can improve disaster preparedness and response, social equity, economic stability, and environmental sustainability, and ensure frontline communities do not continue to be disproportionately impacted by climate change.

Climate change poses significant risks to community wellbeing and social cohesion.

Urban Ocean Lab conceives of community resilience as the ability of a group to harness and cultivate local knowledge, resources, and networks to effectively prepare for, withstand, and respond to climate shocks and stressors.

Effectively fostering community resilience hinges on community involvement, power sharing, and collaboration; workforce development and related community programming; and improving livelihoods and health.

Below are a few resources that offer critical context and guidance for policymakers, practitioners, and advocates shaping the future of community resilience in the U.S.

Urban Ocean Lab is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that cultivates rigorous, creative, equitable, and practical climate and ocean policy for the future of coastal cities.
